Why are they dying?

Orangutans used to live freely as normal animals, but over the last 10 years, orangutans have entered a crisis, where there are hundreds of the species dying every year, and more are dying every day. Man’s insistent tearing down of the forests, and natural forest fires, have caused the orangutan population to decrease significantly. In the last 20 years, they have lost approximately 80% of their homeland; in the fires of 1997 and 1998, 1/3 of the orangutans died in the flames. According to experts, orangutans may be extinct in as little as 10 years.

There are many threats to the survival of orangutans and they are very difficult to prevent. These threats include:
- Loss of habitat (from people and forest fires)
- Illegal hunting (for fur and sometimes meat)
- Pet trade (people are greedy and capture Orangutans as pets)
